If you loved the feisty main character in An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good by Helene Tursten or the found family in A Man Called Oveby Fredrik Backman then enter the world of Vera Wong.
In this charming story, Vera, a lonely widow and mother, spends her days at her empty tea shop hoping for customers to come in.
Vera is almost delighted when her rigid routine is broken as she finds a dead body in her tea shop one morning.
Vera has very specific ideas of how a police investigation should go.
She is unhappy with the progress she sees so she takes matters into her own hands.
Technically she took matters into her own hands before the police even arrived, swiping a USB drive clutched in the hand of the dead man.
As Vera compiles her list of suspects based on who visits the scene of the crime, she comes to appreciate the new people in her life and hopes that none of them committed murder.
I love it when an author so masterfully creates a character who you wish was a friend in real life.
I was sad when the book ended because Vera was a joy to read.
Sutanto excels in character development as all her characters come to life on the page.
This trend of older protagonists seems to be taking off lately and I’m here for it. They have been some of my favorite books to read.
Vera Wong is definitely a five-star read and I can’t wait to read more of Sutanto’s books.
