5⭐

Kelley Armstrong has been a favorite of mine for years. The Cainsville series and Rockton series of books are fantastic. I love them so much I included Omens, the first in the Cainsville series, in the list of books I always recommend. You can find that list here.

When I heard that she was coming out with a romcom I was pleasantly surprised. She is no stranger to including romance in her other books so I couldn’t wait to see her take on romantic comedy. I was not disappointed. At one point while I was reading my 15yo said, “Mom are you smiling at your book?”

As a writer myself I also enjoyed that this was a book about an author desperate to get her debut book published, so desperate that she submits it under a male pen name—Zane Remington.

I recently read a post by Kelley Armstrong that this was an Easter egg that gives a nod to the Remington Steele series where a private detective uses a man’s name and hires a man to play the part of Remington Steele.

Daphne feels like she has to do the same when not only does her book get picked up by an agent but soon she is on the publishing train and people want to know more about Zane Remington. Daphne’s desire to stay out of the spotlight has her hiring a guy to play the part of Zane, but it soon gets out of hand as the book takes off and the lies mount up.

Chris takes the role of Zane Remington because he quite simply needs the money after his accountant partner bleeds their company dry with his drug habit. When Chris meets Daphne he tries to keep up the tough guy image that the role requires but finds that he wants to share his true self with her.

I love the dual point of view and the hilarious banter. This is the perfect summer read!
