Kim Harrison has created a fresh new fantasy world in her book Three Kinds of Lucky.
This new and intriguing fantasy world introduces us to Petra Grady, a Sweeper–the lowest tier in the magical hierarchy.
Petra struggles with her father’s enigmatic past and confronts the challenges of her own present.
Harrison introduces readers to a unique magical system of spells and dross, the residual waste left behind by magic users.
As Petra endures her role as Sweeper, tasked with cleaning up what spells leave behind but unable to wield magic herself, we see her fighting against the system that places her so clearly at the bottom.
When she comes in contact with Shadow, something all magic users fear, something changes and she wonders if she might be more magical than she thought.
As she fights against the hierarchy she discovers a forgotten gift and her father’s true legacy.
I gave the book four stars because it was an enjoyable read with lots of action and an interesting fantasy world.
It had the feel of a YA book to me. Petra’s journey to fight against the status quo in this magical society.
I can’t say enough about the worldbuilding in this book. This is the first in a series so much more adventure and magic to come.
If you are a Kim Harrison fan, or if you simply want to enter a fantasy world with a unique magic system, I recommend Three Kinds of Lucky.
