The Icarus Chronicles, a duology by John David Anderson, has all the fun of Guardians of the Galaxy while tackling more serious topics of how we use the Earth’s resources.

The series begins with Stowaway. Humans discover a new and mysterious mineral buried deep within the Earth’s crust and soon after the Aykari arrive in their fancy space ships with promises of technological advances in exchange for mining this new mineral. Many humans are enamored with the idea of space travel and the worlds the Aykari will open up with these advances.

When another alien race arrives guns blasting, they are immediately seen as the enemy and Earth become embroiled in the conflict between the two races.

Leo, our main character, loses his mother in one of these attacks, and his father thinks it best to move off Earth onto a Coalition space ship where he can continue to research the amazing mineral that holds so much untapped potential.

Leo’s father is kidnapped by the Djarik and Leo and his brother Gareth are left behind on a broken spaceship.

When a band of pirates raids the ship, Gareth sees it as a way for Leo to escape and get help.

Over the course of the two books, the reader is on an adventure to save Leo’s father, Earth, and possibly the universe. With fabulous characters and an exciting plot, Anderson is able to make his readers think about the world around them while taking them on a wild ride.
