Jane Austen Mysteries
Jane Austen is one of my all-time favorite authors. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite (of course), but I have read them all.
I don’t usually reread books, but I do rewatch the Austen movies and miniseries. I love the Pride and Prejudice movie, but prefer the miniseries; Colin Firth is Mr. Darcy for me.
When I miss the Jane Austen world, I turn to retellings, especially murder mysteries to revisit those familiar characters. Here are four series that I have read and loved.
Jane Austen Murder Mysteries by Tirzah Price
This YA series is very entertaining and follows three different Jane Austen books.
Pride and Premeditation–Lizzie Bennett is determined to prove that she can be a private investigator and also determined that she can get the better of Fitzwilliam Darcy. When she believes an innocent person has been arrested for murder, she investigates to find the real killer. Darcy is pulled along trying to keep her out of danger.
Sense and Second Degree Murder–Elinor Dashwood is an aspiring scientist. When she finds her father dead from an apparent poisoning, it is up to her and younger sister Marianne to find the murderer. Because of his outdated will, the Dashwood ladies are being evicted from their childhood home. Can they solve the case before it is too late?
Manslaughter Park–Fanny Price has escaped her unfortunate family circumstances thanks to the generosity of her uncle Sir Thomas Bertram. No one else in the family is happy that he has taken her in. When Sir Thomas dies in a tragic accident, Fanny suspects murder. Can she get justice for her uncle?
In Want of a Suspect by Tirzah Price
A Lizzie & Darcy Mystery
This series picks up after Pride and Premeditation and follows the Lizzie & Darcy characters on their next adventure. Lizzie is now working for her father and is hired to find a mysterious woman who might be responsible for a deadly warehouse fire. It was just published and I am getting ready to start it. I hope Price continues this series.
Murder in Highbury by Vanessa Kelly
An Emma Knightley Mystery
When Emma stumbles across the body of Mrs. Elton, it looks like murder. When Miss Bates is accused, Emma is determined to prove her innocence. Full of twists and turns, will the Knightleys solve the murder before another innocent person is hurt? This is another new book that I hope becomes a series.
Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney Mysteries by Claudia Gray
The Murder of Mr. Wickham–When Emma and Mr. Knightley entertain at a summer house party, all of my favorite (and unfavorite!) Jane Austen characters come together. When a murder occurs, someone in the party must be the murderers. Juliet Tilney, daughter of Henry and Catherine from Northhanger Abbey, teams up with the son of the Darcy’s, Jonathan to solve the murder.
The Late Mrs. Willoughby–Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney reunite to solve the murder of Mr. Willoughby’s new wife. Marianne Brandon is under suspicion because of her previous relationship with Mr. Willoughby and Juliet is determined to prove her innocence.
The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh–I should get this one next week from the library. Lady Catherine suspects that someone is trying to kill her. She enlists her grand-nephew Jonathan Darcy and his companion Juliet Tilney to help find the culprit. The investigators must also try to navigate their prickly fathers and their growing feelings for each other.
The Rushworth Family Plot–June 2025
With all of my favorite characters, another murder, and hopefully a wedding, I can’t wait to read this one next year!
These are some of my favorite Jane Austen adaptions. Do you have any others that you would recommend? Drop them in the comments so that I can check them out. Even though it’s not a murder mystery, I think I am going to add Pride and Prejudice in Spaceby Alexis Lampley to my TBR. It sounds fun.
