The Thirty-One Doors by Kate Hulme is a debut novel with a gorgeous cover.

Our main character Detective Sergeant Frank Glover has recently moved from Manchester to a small village after failing to capture the Blueblood Killer. As he is leaving the station he receives a mysterious and cryptic call from Scarpside the isolated mansion on the hill overlooking the village.

Answering the call, he finds himself in a snowstorm, with no telephone reception, a few frightened servants and all the dinner guests missing. As Frank struggles to put the clues together, the bodies begin to stack up.

If you like traditional Agatha Christie style mysteries with the mad dash through a mysterious house like in the Clue movie, then you will enjoy this book.

There were lots of characters and that was hard to keep straight at times and there was part of the ending that I was unsure about. But overall I thought the descriptions and word choice was beautifully written and it was a great first attempt at a difficult genre.
