Leading Ladies

This March we wanted to concentrate on some recommendations–smart, funny women who are the star of the show. We have a wide variety of fascinating women for you to choose from including the little girl everyone loved to hate, a shapeshifter, and several who are a little too close to murder for comfort. Here are some of our favorites.
Finlay Donovan series by Elle Cosimano
(currently 5 books)

If you like Stephanie Plum, give Finlay Donovan a try! Recently divorced mom of two, is mistaken for a contract killer and hilarity ensues. With a host of funny side characters, and a hot cop thrown in for some romance, these books are pure escapism.
Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
(currently 14 books)

This shapeshifter series has romance, mystery, and fantasy all rolled into one. Mercy Thompson is a coyote shifter who likes being a ‘lone wolf.’ But when the local Alpha is injured and his daughter goes missing, Mercy knows she has to intervene even if that means involving herself in pack business. I love this series and it just keeps getting better.
The Lady Janies and Mary series’ (3 books each series)
by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

Take historical figures, add some supernatural vibes and a whole lot of wit and sarcasm. When I first picked up My Lady Jane I wasn’t ready for all of the sass. I walked away. But when I picked it up again, I flew through the pages, laughing out loud at the absurdity of this book. If you saw the Netflix series ( unfortunately cancelled), then you know. Give these a try if you are in the mood for fun.
Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
by Jesse Q. Sutanto (book 2 out in April)

We have reviewed this one before. It is one of our favorites with an older woman who becomes embroiled in a murder case. Mainly because she steals evidence and tries to investigate on her own. In her defense the murder happened in her tea shop so she has a right to be involved, even if it kills her.
Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated by Alison Arngrim

The little girl we all loved to hate! Definitely listen to the audiobook of this fascinating memoir. Alison Arngrim grew up in the middle of the Hollywood scene and she’s seen some things. Her humor shines through and gives you a different perspective on those Little House days.
An Elderly Lady Is Up to No Good by Helene Tursten ( 2 books)

“Maud is an irascible 88-year-old Swedish woman with no family, no friends, and… no qualms about a little murder.”
Things happen around Maud. Her neighbors seem to have the worst luck. And Maud seems to always get what she thinks she deserves. Don’t even think about crossing her.
