Can you love a book and hate the ending? I guess you can, because I loved The Cartographers but the ending had me scratching my head. I think hate is too strong a word for this ending, more like confused by the giant plot hole.
Nell Young has loved maps her whole life. Born into a family of cartographers, she was literally born to work with maps. When she is fired from her work at her dream job by her own father, she loses more than her job. Her relationship ends and her passion fades.
Nell has spent her life without her mother who died tragically when Nell was small. Now her father has been found dead in his office and Nell discovers a map among his things. This map leads her on a quest to find out if her father was murdered and what really happened to her mother.
This book has maps, mystery, and magic. What else could you ask for? Maybe a fix for the giant plot hole.
I loved the maps, the characters were well-developed and the magic was interesting. I was thoroughly enjoying my journey. So when the ending was disappointing I was still left satisfied with a fantastic reading experience even with the plot hole.
